My ceramic work is based in a background in sculpture and shaped by a longstanding love of surrealist art. I’m interested in the rub between utility and expression - how an object can be both functional and strange. I love a bit of whimsy.
I work with hand building and wheel techniques to create pieces that have personality, texture, asymmetry, and imperfection are all important parts of my work. My goal isn’t polish. I want there to be a constant reminder that clay in and of itself is an organic element.
I have experimented with various techniques, often gravitating towards slab building and nerikomi. I am currently working one a series of every day items that feature anatomically-accurate body parts.
Below are a selection of some recent pieces.
