Mara is a ceramicist living alone in Brooklyn. When her older sister Emi arrives to recover from surgery, the two women spend 48 hours together in Mara's apartment where they both quietly reckon with motherhood; one in the midst of it, the other staring right at it.

writer's statement
This film started as an attempt to understand my own ambivalence towards motherhood. I found myself watching videos of women speaking candidly about isolation, sadness, and loss of identity. It was like they were grieving themselves in silence, trying to remember who they were before this phase of their lives.
I started thinking about siblings. How they've known us longer than almost anyone, and know a version of us that most people don't. They can remind us of who we are at the heart of it all.
In Matrescence, that's both a gift and a mirror.
